Video

Details:
Reach Out and Touch was commissioned just after the events of September 11th 2001 at a time when it was not clear what state the world would be a year hence. It is intended to deal seriously with children’s experience of conflict in the world and closer to home, and to allow them to ponder on how conflict might be resolved. This download is of the final song Reach Out and Touch and contains piano/vocal score with MP3 backing tracks. It is also suggested that the song be taught with signing for children with hearing impairments.

Key: D major

Vocal Range: A3 - A5

Duration: 6' 30"

Lyrics
There’s a face in the paper –
Just a small photograph
Of a child who is staring.
And a written paragraph
Tells the story of loss and of pain and despair.
And the face in the paper
Asks us to care.

There’s a face on the TV
Of a child with no shoes.
And the child’s like a statue,
Then the lady on the news
Tells of hate and abuse you could never forget.
But the face fades to nothing
As you turn off the set.

Is it asking a million?
Is it asking a score?
Is it asking a thousand
For more and for more?
Will it ask you forever?
Cos forever’s too much.
It’s just asking for someone
To reach out – reach out and touch.

Reach out and touch.
Reach out and touch.
Just touch the hand of someone near you
When the living gets too much.
Reach out and touch.
Reach out and touch.
It’s just asking for someone –
anyone
To reach out and touch.

There’s a face in my memory
Of a child I once knew
Who was angry and frightened
‘Bout what it might do:
Feels the power of anger and fear in its mind.
And perhaps it was your face,
But it might have been mine.

It’s just asking for someone –
anyone To reach out and touch.

It’s always the poor,
It’s always the weak,
It’s always the ones who’re left with nothing to eat
That hold up their hands To beg or to pray –
The world doesn’t have to carry on this way.

I pick up a stick,
I pick up a stone.
The choices that I make aren’t for me alone.
To build or destroy,
To give or to take.
The world can be changed by the moves I make

Is it asking a million?
Is it asking a score?
Is it asking a thousand
For more and for more?
Will it ask you forever?
Cos forever’s too much.
It’s just asking for someone
To reach out – reach out and touch.

Reach out and touch.
Reach out and touch.
Just touch the hand of someone near you
When the living gets too much.
Reach out and touch.
Reach out and touch.
It’s just asking for someone –
anyone
To reach out and touch.

There’s a face in the bus queue,
There’s a face in the park,
There’s a face in the schoolyard,
There’s a face in the dark,
There’s a face in the mirror that stares back at you.
And all of these faces
Asking what can you do?

Reach out and touch.
Reach out and touch.
Just touch the hand of someone near you
When the living gets too much.

Reach out and touch.
Reach out and touch.
It’s just asking for someone,
Asking for someone,
Asking for someone –
anyone,
To reach out and touch.
Reach...out...and...touch!
